Upcoming Live Sessions:
There are no sessions currently scheduled. If you’re interested in taking this class, please contact Rachel (rachel virginia swirsky AT gmail) or Cat (cat AT catrambo.com) by email.
You don’t need to describe every detail in your story–just the right ones. Learn to evoke character and setting using the perfect images. This class combines brief lectures and online discussion with plenty of freewriting exercises for practice.
With the right details, you can make the reader imagine a three-dimensional world with only a handful of sentences. You can paint a full picture of a person or a place with far less than 1,000 words. The first half of this class focuses on how to discover those details, and translate them dynamically to the page.In the second half of the class, we’ll focus on using those details to show your story’s unique perspective on the world. Your descriptions can enliven your characters, establish mood, and clarify your themes.
A detail isn’t just a detail; it’s an insight. Some characters are botanists; some are painters. Some narrators are verbose; others are concise. Some stories are meandering; others line up on the straight-and-narrow. Are you writing about age or youth, optimism or melancholy, gladiators or robots? The details you pick, and the language you express them in, are some of the most powerful tools you can wield. Don’t just describe things; learn to make every image unique, dynamic, and memorable.
The cost for a single session live workshop is $99 for new students; $79 for students who have formerly taken a class with Cat (or Rachel). Classes are taught via Google Hangouts; all you need is a computer with a microphone and reliable Internet connection, but a webcam is suggested.
